Expanded Operations and Production Milestones

Atlasburg, PA: APEX Design, Inc. is pleased to announce equipment and business expansions since the last ARMTech exhibit. An additional 7-axis, dual spindle CNC Swiss machine and two LNS Express magazine bar feeders have been added to our operations. We now have four manufacturing cells, each configured under lean manufacturing principles and capable of unattended machining.

The latest turn-mill machine features four live tools, C-axis, .0004" resolution and long-shaft part handling. This fourth manufacturing cell includes remote communications, chip conveyor and an LNS 6' magazine bar feeder for lights-out automation. A second LNS 6' magazine bar feeder has also been installed on last year's new super precision Hardinge GT27SP gang tool lathe, completing the automation package for the third manufacturing cell.

The last 12 months have witnessed new machining milestones with:
  • Over 30,000 stainless steel precision fiber optic machined components for a fellow member of the Electro-Optics Alliance
  • Three different Inconel 718 parts for 280 tight tolerance Thiokol/NASA propulsion nozzle sets
  • Hard turning of heat treated 416 stainless steel down to .031" diameter +.0000/-.0003" on both ends of a 1.750" long pin for the Navy's barometer gage needles
  • Over 600 surgical tooling components for a division of Pfizer
  • 1,000 double lead traversing screws for the Army's M177 mortar
  • Multi-year order for various Boeing aircraft bushings
"We have had another successful year and are pleased to have been selected by a Boeing Tier I supplier for the production of precision bushings used in both military and new commercial aircraft," commented Melissa M. Fluharty, President, APEX Design, Inc. "Both the equipment investments and customer project milestones of the last year have prepared the company for a larger role in the Department of Defense supply chain."
